Last week I shared with you my kitchen floor plans for the wall-unit part of the kitchen, if you missed it, you can take a squiz at that here. This week, I bring you – the island!
The island will essentially act as a divide between the kitchen and the living area. It won’t have any shelving on top so you can see straight through to the living area from the kitchen. I want to ensure that the counter top is significantly wider than the shelving unit underneath so that we can put stools underneath. Perfect for kids to do their homework, or friends to sit and chat while you cook up a storm in the kitchen.
As for the design itself, there is nothing worse than a kitchen that doesn’t function well. So I spent A LOT of time sketching plans to ensure all the elements of the kitchen were in the right spot. Take a look at my sketch below…
- My Kitchen Floor Plans
So here were my thoughts when sketching:
- Put the dishwasher next to the wall, that way when it’s open people don’t trip over it.
- Large draws for cutlery, cups and plates go next to the dishwasher so it’s easy to pack and unpack.
- The sink goes in the center of the island for symmetry, and so that hubby can watch TV while he washes up. Genius.
- The bin is at the entrance to the kitchen so it’s easy to access when walking past.
On the edge of the island, I wanted something practical AND pretty, as it is the first thing people will see when they walk in. I found this picture which inspired me…
See the very end of the island has that pretty open shelf? Well, I love that idea. I would probably store my cookbooks there, as they are pretty and won’t get sprayed with food. Above it will be a hidden drawer to store odds and ends, then below it will be a built-in wine rack.
Since the island will be the main structural feature in the living area, it needs to look beautiful. So we will go with some fancy-pants tapware – like the one in the picture below. Heaven.
Also, for one more little feature item, we would like to build one of these awesome chopping boards above the bin. We asked our kitchen designer about it and are yet to hear back. But hopefully we can!
So that’s our kitchen plan! Let’s hope it all goes accordingly and isn’t too pricey… we are yet to get the quote. Eek.
