In last week’s post, I shared the 10 tricks we used to restore our horrible old bedrooms into brand-spankin new ones, and I am so thrilled with how they turned out. Sometimes I just go and sit on the floor, smelling in the new carpet and new paint smell. True story.
But now that they are all looking schmik, I have the daunting task of filling them with furniture. I am often frozen by indecision when it comes to buying furniture, I’m terrified of buying the wrong piece. This is rather troublesome as I have an entire house to furnish.
But nothing gives you a good kick up the bum like a freebie! At JUST the right time, I received an email from Super Amart saying they read my blog and they would like to congratulate me on finishing my renovation. To celebrate, they offered me a free piece of furniture – SCORE!
(This could not have come at a better time, as we are very strapped for cash after sinking all our mulah into the reno).
Once I received the email, my fingers couldn’t move fast enough. I went straight to the Super Amart website and put together my top 5 short list…
1. Industrial Chair
I have loved this style of chair for years. The industrial shape along with the cold, grey steel would make the perfect accompaniment to a timber desk. We would love to set up a home office in either our guest room or the main bedroom (yet to be decided). We would mainly use it for my blogging and so that Matt can work from home sometimes. I’m picturing a heavy, recycled timber desk and this grey industrial chair – timber/steel combo heaven.
2. Bookcase/Locker
I believe that the books people read say a lot about them. For that reason I love displaying books in the home. At the moment, all our books are hidden from view in a built-in-wardrobe, which I hate. This bookcase would be perfect for displaying books in the open shelves, while hiding unsightly objects behind those fabulous vintage-inspired locker doors. I’m picturing this bookcase under the stairs in our living room.
3. Victorian Day Bed
One thing I need to get a wriggle on with, is the guest room. We have several close friends who live interstate and they often come back to Sydney for visits. I have felt horrible the last few times they were here, as we had a spare room but no furniture in it for them to stay. This modern re-make of a Victorian daybed is beautiful. The detailing in the metalwork is just gorgeous.
4. Floor Lamp
In the words of Steve Carrell “I love lamp”. I’m not kidding. Lamps are my all time favourite homewares. And this one is a beauty! The photo makes it look smaller than it is, it may look like an ordinary desk lamp, but it is much larger. It is actually a floor lamp, standing at 2 meters tall when extended! It would look fab standing next to the sofa in our living room. I am also a big fan of mixing textures, so adding a metallic lamp to a softly furnished room adds a bit of oomph!
5. Hanging Egg
This would be a splurge item. I would love to have one of these babies for our bedroom verandah. Ever since I loved in the USA, I have fallen in love with swinging chairs. The swinging porch swing is a staple in every American home and I am determined to steal this tradition for our home too. This hanging egg chair is a modern twist on that porch swing and I just adore it.
So after mulling it over for a few days, I decided to go with… DRUM ROLL…
THE VICTORIAN DAY BED!
This is JUST what we need at the moment. Somewhere our friends can come and sleep – comfortably! I didn’t want a pull-out sofabed as I am yet to sleep on one that doesn’t leave you drowning in the middle of the mattress and have bars digging into your back. Am I right?
Along with the pretty daybed, I was also given a mattress. Super Amart have a great collection of mattresses, ranging from top of the line to cheap and cheerful.
We have put the daybed in our front room as that’s where our guests will stay. However, this room may also be used as our home-office, and this daybed is perfect for both scenarios. It doesn’t take up the whole room, leaving us with space for a desk and a filing cabinet. We can also store another mattress underneath for when two people come to stay.
When I described to my mum the antique-style daybed, she offered me a really special gift to go with it. This gorgeous antique quilt was my Grandmother’s. She passed away when I was 5, so I only have a few memories of her. This stunning quilt will now take up a special place in my heart, and in my home.
So all our guests who will now come to stay, will have to thank Super Amart for their stylish and comfortable bed.
Enjoy your week!
