This week, I tried out a new paint product – Porters Chalk Emulsion! It’s been around for a while, but I’ve only just discovered it. It’s is an Australian product, which means it is reasonably priced compared to the international brands that must be shipped downunder. Aussie Aussie Aussie!
Now, what to paint!? Remember a couple of months ago I ventured to a an antique auction? Well, while I was there I found this sweet magazine rack. I could see the potential – it was made from solid timber and had a really lovely shape. It just required a bit of love.
So this week, I finally got around to restoring it. First thing I did was give it a really good clean! Some sugar soap in warm water, and a sponge was all it required. Then I tried (in vain unfortunately) to remove the ancient sticker from the front. I used a blade, but it had been on there so long that it was impossible to remove.
So, in the end, I just had to just paint over it. I chose this GORGEOUS mint-green colour for the sides and the ends. Isn’t it purty???
The best thing about Chalk Paint, is that you don’t need to sand the piece in preparation, you can paint directly on top of older paint layers.
I chose this warm cream colour for the details – it’s called Panna Cotta. I decided to paint the feet, the handle and a large portion of the interior of the magazine rack this lovely colour.
I let the first coat dry, then painted a second coat. Once it was thoroughly dry, I rubbed on a layer of Porter’s Stucco Wax and buffed it with a cloth. This provided a seal over the paint and left a lovely finish.
Here is the finished product!
I absolutely adore it, and think it would look lovely next to the couch in the living room, or even beside a bed… for some late night trashy reading:) I loved using Porter’s Chalk Emulsion, it is easy to use and the Stucco Wax leaves a lovely finish. I bought the paint and wax from Inspirations Paint.
Since I don’t yet have a house to store this beautiful piece, I am selling it for $75 on my Online Store HERE. Perhaps it is that special Christmas gift for a friend of family member.
Merry Christmas everyone!
