So here’s the deal. We are going to have a small laundry. I’m talking 1290mm wide x 2515mm long. And yes, one of the most annoying things about renovating a house, is learning how to talk in millimeters. I mean, I get it, we have to be as exact as possible so everything fits. But seriously, it’s soooo annoying! So for those among us NOT renovating a house, our laundry will be 1.29m wide by 2.51 m long.
For this reason, we need to get creative with the space to ensure it functions properly AND looks pretty.
Here is the floor plan showing the dimensions of the laundry. (Ignore the layout, we don’t like it so are going to come up with a better one!)
As you can see, there is a doorway at one end of the laundry and a window at the other end. This means we need to design the layout around them and ensure we don’t block access at either end.
The essential elements we need for our laundry are:
- Broom Cupboard (storage for brooms, mops, vacuum cleaner and ironing board)
- Sink (for hand washables and soaking)
- Benchtop (for folding clothes)
- Space (for washing machine and dryer)
- Cupboards (for storage of detergents, craft, paint etc.)
Laundry Layout #1:
Let’s call this the wall-layout. Essentially, the cabinetry, benches, sink and washer/dryer machines all just run along the southern wall. It is a useful design as it addresses all of our needs. Here is a pretty photo-version of the wall-layout that I found on Pinterest.
The one factor that kinda bugs me about this design, is that the washing machine would have to be a front loader. It means that we couldn’t hang the dryer on the wall so I’d also have to bend down to access that too. Now maybe it’s because I’m pregnant, but right now bending down to ground level is a MISSION!
After sketching various designs for HOURS, we came to the conclusion that in order to have a top-loading washing machine and hanging dryer, we would have to sacrifice our bench space, as the bench would need to run across the top of our machines. This is not a desirable option. The lesser of two evils, in my opinion, is having front loading machines. This allows us to have bench space. I would just have to suck it up and bend down to get clothes our.
The photo above also shows a wall-layout as well, but it splits up the washer and dryer by placing the sink in between them. I don’t like this as much, as it limits the overall surface area of the bench. What I DO love about this laundry is the sunken ceramic sink and the beautiful marble bench tops. This laundry design is so my style! Don’t you think it’s sooo purty?
Tomorrow, I’ll share with you our 2nd Laundry Layout #2 and you can tell me which one you like best!
