Whenever I move into a new apartment… and let’s be honest, that seems to be every single year at the moment. I always feel overwhelmed by the blankness of it. Not necessarily the blank space, it’s easy to fill that up with a couch, table, tv, bookshelf, dresser and a bed. But staring at the blank walls and wondering how I’m going to fill them, can send me into cardiac arrest.
So, if you have a blank wall that is bugging you and you can’t think of an easy to fill it, here are 5 big ticket items that can solve your problem!
1. Time Zone Clocks
We all have a friend or family member living overseas who we rarely call as we never know what time it is in their country. So, set up a series of clocks and set them to various time zones… it will fill your wall AND make you a better friend (… hint hint to my Aussie pals!!)
2. Vintage Window Frames
The best thing about vintage window frames is that they come in all shapes and sizes. Plus, if you keep your eyes peeled you can probably find one for free. Tips, junk-yards and demolition yards are a good place to start. You can always paint the frame to suit your colour scheme too.
3. Boating Oars
I’m throwing this one in for my Mum (who has recently bought a beach house) and my sister Mel (who is renovating a beach house). Wooden oars are such a romantic and beautiful addition to a beach-side home. I especially love the idea of hanging them high above a door frame or window.
4. Maps
Maps are a great way to fill a wall space as they are large, interesting to look at it and can be really cheap! A friend of mine bought a sheet of wrapping paper that was actually a map of Paris. She then framed it and hung it on the wall. Merveilleux!
5. Flags
Americans and Brits are so great at celebrating their flags and displaying them in their homes. But as Aussies I think we cringe when thinking about hanging our flag. Thefore, why not buy the flag of your favourite holiday country… that way you can feel like you’re always on vacation!
Don’t be daunted by filling big blank walls. Think outside the box and try and discover big items that will fill the space… it’s a hell of a lot easier than creating multiple gallery walls!
