A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post entitled Help! I have a Small Kitchen. This came about as we moved into a great apartment on the Upper West Side. The one thing not in its favour is its teeny tiny kitchen. It has no bench space at all and the cupboards are too high for me to reach. So I did a makeover and decided to go for an industrial/shabby-chic look!
Here is the before picture… this was taken just after the movers had left!
Firstly, I needed to get me some bench space. I found this stainless steel table with adjustable legs. I set the legs to 35 inches and it is now the perfect height and size for my new kitchen bench.
Crockery and glassware are lovely decorative items, so I figured why not show them off! I bought this great little set of exposed shelves and screwed them into the wall. To add an extra touch of pretty, I also bought some lace curtains and vintage curtain rods.
I had a whole lotta fun playing with the arrangement of my nik-naks. I love kitchens that incorporate some living room items into the decor. I found a few rustic photo frames to display with the kitchenware and just love them.
Next, I needed a pantry to store all the food. I found this cute powder blue locker which tied in beautifully with the industrial look of the table. Plus it has adjustable shelves so I was able to configure them to suit my storage needs.
When decorating, don’t forget about decorating the tops of your shelves. My hubby Matt found this cute vintage picnic basket on the curb by our apartment and brought it home. He knows me too well!
I bought this cute little vase last year from a market stall, it acts as a pretty alternative to storing my utensils and just generally makes me happy!
To break up the lovely wooden floors, I bought a blue and white modern rug. I still have a few things I want to add… I’d love a little kitchen chair to sit in the corner in front of the heater. I’m also keen to get some coloured plates and bowls instead of the stock white ones I have. So I’m on the hunt!
