In-Home Bar

I grew up in a house where the wine bottles were stored under the staircase. They were certainly not put on display or easily accessible for thirsty teenagers to get their hands on. Maybe that was a wise decision considering my parents were outnumbered by teenagers 2:5!

However, my time in New York has seen me visit dozens of dreamy apartments and the majority of them have a fully stocked bar for that sneaky midday cocktail! And boy do they make for a gorgeous design piece in the home! So as homage to Don Draper, here are some stylish options for setting up your very own home bar – Mad Men style!

Dez's Bar

Last night I went I went to an Aussie friend’s NYC apartment for dinner. In full disclosure, I want to steal every single thing in her apartment, including her latest addition. This GORGEOUS 1930’s Bar Cabinet she bought on E-Bay after a year long hunt. Boy was the wait worth it! I LOVE the interior light, the flip down mirror and the martini olive picks!

The Bar Cart is not only a classic beauty, its a very convenient way to serve drinks. A classic bar cart is usually round or rectangular and has two shelves to stylishly display bottles, barware and stemware. Its portability allows you to stock up in the kitchen and move to the dining room or even to the back patio, making entertaining a breeze!

If you have more space, you can totally go the whole hog with a Bar Cabinet! This purpose built beauty can act as a wine rack as well as somewhere to store your wine glasses and champagne flutes, freeing up some kitchen cupboard space. It also folds away into a lovely side buffet (which may cease the temptation of a midday cocktail every time your walk past it).

Don’t rush out to make a big purchase on your new bar quite yet. You may find you already have a buffet, small table or cabinet that could be transformed into your very own bar. This french cabinet is the perfect example – typically used to store those 17 platters one receives on their wedding day, it now serves beautifully as a fully stocked bar.

Bar Tray

A Butler’s Tray is a simple, yet stylish way to display and serve drinks. It is light and portable making it easy to entertain outside or even to surprise one’s wife with a champagne breakfast. On her Birthday. On the 17 of March. (Note: ensure husband reads this post).
