Upcycling is one of the latest trends, and for those of you wondering… it means taking something old and creating a masterpiece. Old doors are the perfect piece to upcycle and they can be sourced cheaply from your local tip, Freecycle or ebay. I have been browsing ebay today and there are thousands of different types of doors starting from only $5. Here are 7 ways to upcycle an old door.
1. Blackboard from Old Door
This blackboard looks amazing and is practical and inexpensive…what more could you want! This door has been painted, then sanded to create the shabby chic look, and finally the magnetic blackboard paint applied to create this funky weekly organiser.
2. Outdoor Table
This outdoor table is beautiful. After painting the table, the creator stencilled on some summer words. She used Ikea trestle legs / sawhorses as the legs. The 2 main colours in my house are red and aqua, so I love these 2 colours here together.
3. Corner Book Shelf
This corner book shelf is made from a discarded folding closet door, however a regular door could also be used and cut in half. The creator takes you through a step by step tutorial on her website The Idea Room.
4. Bedside Lamps
Who would have thought an old door could be used in so many ways. Here 2 old doors have had bedside lamps mounted on them. There is a trend away from lamps on bedside tables. Bedside lights are often hung from the ceiling. Hanging the lights on the old doors provides an option for renters, because you can take your creations with you when you move.
5. Bedhead
I am going to start searching for an old door to make a bedhead like this one. We currently have an ensemble bed without a bedhead. This bedhead really finishes off the room. One thing I would recommend, is that if you have a tall husband a bed end is not very practical.
6. Screen Door Shelving
Penny had previously recommended using a ladder to hang all your pots and pans in her Ladder blog. Well here is another unique storage idea. An old screen door has been turned into a showpiece, by hanging it with chains to the ceiling. A paint job and some extra hooks may also be needed.
7. Louve Door Shutters
Upcycling shutter doors with a simple coat of paint can work wonders! Hang one in your kitchen or hallway to store all those birthday cards and special notes, or join three together for a unique and rustic bedhead.
