Susie Makes a Coat Rack

After years of having my long necklaces constantly tied in knots from sitting on my dresser, I was looking for somewhere pretty and practical to put them. I asked the lovely ladies at ChicToShore to come up with some suggestions and was inspired by all of the fabulous ideas! They also posted an article on different beach towel/bag racks racks and one of those actually stood out to me as a potential jewelry holder. The idea I loved was an old piece of wood with cute hooks on it. I have always loved the beautiful door knobs at Anthropologie so I thought I might try to combine the two and make something useful as well as pretty!

So, here is my step by step process:

  1. I went to a great demolition warehouse with lots of old and reusable furniture and they had an old bin with scraps of wood. I found a pretty piece of dark wood that was the perfect size, and they ended up giving it to me for free, result!
  2. I then went to Anthropologie to find some gold/blue decorations and managed to get 2 beautiful full priced door knobs (in gold and clear) and 2 pretty ones (gold and blue) that were in the sale!
  3. The next bit should have been easy but I struggled to drill the right sized holes into the wood. The wood was very solid and tricky to drill through, plus my drill wasn’t the best! It was also hard because the door knobs were huge and not really meant for chunks of wood, but for drawers with proper sized slots to put them in! I ended up hammering and drilling enough so that I could screw the knobs in but they wouldn’t go the whole way in and stood out a bit far.

I decided this wouldn’t be great for my jewelry as I wanted to hang them over the knobs, not the screws. However, I realized I also really needed a coat rack for my hallway so this ended up being a perfect solution!

I really enjoyed making the coat rack as I am not that practical or artistic and felt very proud of my first attempt. I love the end product and am so excited to have visitors over and try it out!

If I were to do it again, I would either find a softer, more practical piece of wood, or try to find smaller door knobs. It might also be possible to use a better drill and make a proper fitting for a door knob to screw in to.
