Remember when you bought that really expensive set of Royal Dalton wine glasses to serve your ‘fancy’ guests drinks? Well, you shouldn’t have bothered. My ‘fancy’ New York friends are all serving drinks out of jars…. yup… jars.
I’m not even talking expensive, specifically-designed-drinking jars. I’m talking buy peach pieces from the super-market, eat them, rinse out the jar and then serve wine in it. For those who are unfamiliar – mason jar simply refers to any kind of jar that is used to preserve food and they are seriously hot property at the moment!
The good news is that while popular, mason jars are still super cheap (as long as you buy them from the grocery store). The only rule is this – you should have an entire set of matching ones when serving drinks. So the next time you are doing your groceries, check out the range of products that come served in jars and try and choose one that has a decorative element to it – either a cute handle, or some imprint on the glass. Then buy 12 of them! (Just don’t ask me what to do with the 4 liters of strawberry jam you got as a by-product). One of the great things about mason jars is that they act as a multi-function glass, so you can serve wine, beer, punch or even juice and soda for the kids (and it doesn’t matter if they break one).
Mason jars are also being recycled and used as candle holders and vases too. This time you CAN incorporate different shapes and sizes, so start saving all your olive, jam and pickle jars. After cleaning them out, soak the jars in hot water for a few hours first so the label softens and can be easily removed. Then add pretty touches by tying twine or ribbon around the outside and either placing a poesy of flowers or a tea light in them. They all make for beautiful table center-pieces. For those who are extra-handy – attach wire to the top of the jar to create a lantern which you can hang outside during your alfresco dining nights!
