Another request! This time from Beverly, who wants some inspiration for finding the perfect bar stool. My parents-in-law recently built a brand new home from the ground up, and of all the HUGE tasks they faced, no greater was that of buying the bar stools.
There are 4 key thing to consider when searching for the holy grail of bar stools:
1. Functionality
Firstly, think about how you want to use your breakfast bar. Will it be a quick chat area? Somewhere to place things down when you get home? A homework bench for the kids? A place to sit and chat when a friend comes over for a cup of tea? Somewhere to eat meals? Then consider, who is more likely to sit on them – adults or children? Once you figure this out – the rest will be easy!
2. Comfort
Functionality will greatly impact the comfort factor. If your bench is going to be used for dinner or homework – you are going to have to factor in a comfortable stool. This would ideally include a back, a foot rest (for kids to climb up on) and a comfortable seat (leather, fabric, cushions, wicker etc). However if the bench is simply designed to be a transitional area in your home and the stools are there simply as embellishment – go nuts and buy a fabulously trendy industrial stool.
3. Appearance
Of course you need to love the look of your kitchen stools and there are so many gorgeous options out there! When looking at stools keep scale in mind – in regards to the space around the breakfast bar, and the other furniture in the room too. Over-sized stools can really crowd a kitchen!
4. Measurements
If you take one thing away from this blog it has to be DEPTH! I think we have all sat on a stool only to realize our GIGANTIC thighs won’t fit underneath the bench – horrifying for all involved really. So make sure you measure the height of you bench and the height of the stool then leave a big enough gap for Thunder Thighs!
