Growing up, my parents had a world globe that was kept in Dad’s study. I thought its main (and perhaps only) purpose was to help me with my geography assignments. I haven’t seen that globe in years and suspect it is packed away in my parent’s attic along with the Encyclopedia Britannica set. I’m desperately hoping it is, and that my 4 other siblings haven’t got their grubby hands on it yet. Because guess what people – the globe is back!
Everywhere I go in New York I see globes – shop front windows, high end stores, trendy flea markets, friend’s apartments and EVEN in front of the Trump Towers! Not only are globes beautiful to look at, they are useful! How long has it been since you spun a globe and jumped on a Bowing 747 to the location your finger landed on!? Too long! The range available is amazing – anything from brass, to wood, to the cheaper plastic kind – they all look great atop a bookshelf or on a coffee table, not to mention a great talking point. The guys will like this one too – as it is a masculine piece of decor. (They just might want a large mahogany desk and pipe to match!)
The Globe Shop in Baulkham Hills, Sydney is a great place to start your hunt, plus you can buy online and they deliver Australia wide. Or keep an eye out at thrift stores, markets or try Gumtree for a bargain!
